The absolute transcendence of an object lies in the harmony between its parts and time. Their most superficial layers appeal to the eye, renewing our senses and igniting thought with the very sight of them. In all objects lives a beautiful, logical engineering system allowing them to be; essential souls, hearts, nerves and bones slaving to achieve the desired functionality we require often so unjustly of our objects. In modernity, designers from all realms have played with adapting these two aspects–appearance and functionality–to achieve the transcendence of their creations. Some will cling to the negation or simplification of vital engineering, and call it minimalism or reinvention. Others will resort to loaning references, defy the limits of materials and reworking shapes to achieve innovation. In the framework of C41’s Issue 15, revolving around the extensive significance of objects, and in the context of Design Month in Milan, the fashion editorials of this month reflect on the understanding of fashion garments as objects of and in harmony with design. Our digital cover posits ambitious design and non-conformist thinking as the primary agents for the transcendence of objects. Fashion of simplicity in appearance and complexity in construction is set against the backdrop of crudely functional yet provocative design objects, nodding to the principle of harmonious appearance and functionality. A Spring story shot in Baia del Corvo, Varazze, puts in parallel the design aspects intrinsic to nature and garments that represent the tension between wearability and ornament. We explore the offering of the Milanese galleries and studios by immersing the Spring fashion in their environments. Lastly, in Barcelona, we delve into the many layers of urban design, employing the perspective of inhabitants to categorise the components that constitute a city.
