Kate Molenkamp (1991) is an emerging Documentary Photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from the BA Photography Program at RMIT University in 2012. As an Anthropology enthusiast, her photography practice embodies her interest and active studies of society and culture. She’s currently working on two longterm projects, ‘Sea and Sky’, based in the Republic of Korean and ‘Norden’, based in the Nordic Region.

About ‘Outlander’:
As a foreigner in Asia, the intensity of urban life is a confronting experience; social and cultural peculiarities attribute to a sense of disorientation. The shift in the customs, the order and the function of society not only make the one feel alien; often you are observed as one in turn.
The landscape is largely infiltrated with countless urban constructions with large masses of people in and around them; going about their daily lives. Eventually, one begins to identify familiarity in the exotic – Patterns in human behaviour and in the social landscape, where one discovers the extents of westernisation – mass consumption, popular culture, and architecture.
Outlander is a curious observation of the urban South Korean landscape from the eyes of a foreigner. The photographs explore not only the vibrant eccentricities unique to this dominantly monocultural society, they examine influences of social, cultural and environmental paradigms in this particular place and time.
This series was first produced and as a small-run publication in 2015.
