Everything, everyone, is born with a purpose. A distinctive intent. Yet this intent does not dictate a specific journey; whether inanimate or living. Like humans, everything has a sense of purpose, but through our unexpected journeys that define us, we are shaped into versatile individuals.

As the saying goes, life imitates art and this is seen clearly through the impermanence of our once beloved items. Once a cherished object, held dearly and nurtured by us; fading away into the background of our lives as we move on, hand-in-hand with time. A bag’s life purpose is to carry and uplift us. But after our short-lived time with them, they dwell into the afterlife of independence, as they move into the nooks and crannies of our spaces.

Bags are so much more than objects that carry our belongings. They are vessels of remittance and evocation. Blank canvases to imprint one’s imagination and creativity embodied from their gold clasps through to their rigorous handles that carry those memories. They are portable stories of craftsmanship, community and conversations sewn together. In all their varied forms, they are embodiments of what humans can do with ingenuity and dedication.

Leaving these objects behind only grows their importance in their story. A forgotten item is only truly forgotten when the last person who resonated or remembered it, forgets; and a home is an abundant shelter of such items. Items of magic and beauty that embrace the spaces they have been left in. A bag of an adolescent girl, the Miu Miu Mini Wander Hobo. Although independent, just like the girl who cherished her, now fades away as it sits on the sofa of her childhood home, waiting for her return. It’s pink leather, slowly blending into the floral patterns that reflect the years of her youth, creating a new purpose for itself.

Or the Valentino shoulder bag; comfortable with her familiar yet atypical surroundings made up of armour, lamps and toys stacked on shelves. A wunderkammer filled with forgotten moments belonging to a family rich in past lives.

Out of sight, out of mind; may be the inevitable pathway of bags however are they truly ever forgotten? One way or another, they stay remembered. Whether that is through carrying one’s goods from one place to another or simply accumulating space in the closet.
