Jingran Zhang was born in 1991 in Chengdu in China. Since 2016, he has been observing the city and society, exploring what can be considered a weird landscape in the streets and the collision between the life of ordinary people and the huge new structure of the cities.

Curiosity and rebellion are probably his biggest motivation, having the goal of using as many perspectives and skills possible in order to take pictures that people may find interesting but also confusing. Her characters, able to recreate an imaginary scenario seem to be robots, weird creatures not fully readable or recognizable, often having a connection with technological elements.

About ‘Linglong Pagoda’ – words by Jingran Zhang:

“Linglong Pagoda” is a project I created between 2017 and 2020. It mainly depicts local habits and religious aesthetics in western China during the change of the new era.

I mixed the documentary-style together with a surrealistic perspective, occasionally adding collage elements to capture various kinds of intersection and contrast like the one of technology and tradition, reality and representation, religion and the senses.

These images show great personality projected towards the future in a fresh and innovative way, even if not without visual references.
