Hassan Kurbanbaev says about himself:
“My name is Hassan Kurbanbaev. b. 1982. I am self taught photographer born and live in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
I tried my hand in short documentaries on social and youth issues and few years in radio journalism, when finally at age of 27 I discovered photography as the best medium to embody myself.
I have no serious print publications to date, but hoping to release a book/zine about Tashkent from my recent projects.
In June 2016 I was selected as one of the best fine-art photographers at PhotoVogue platform curated by senior photo editor of Vogue Italia Alessia Glaviano.
In 2004 I graduated Tashkent State University of Arts, Faculty of Television and Cinematography.”
About ‘Tashkent’:
Last year I had an idea to make a project about the city where I was born and live. I really wanted to do 100 % “Tashkent” project.
Unfortunately the city isn’t documenting well today, if we speak about the series. Also is still something unfamiliar for a westerners and they only guess what is really is. I felt that I have to force myself, like it is my responsibility.
Being not a documentary photographer I spent most of the year in walking around the town and taking photos of the Tashkent, which I thought I knew well. Instead of the just one visual direction, I discovered that I can study the city as an object with the body, the face and finally the fantasy.
As a result ‘Tashkent.DOC’ is a documentary story about my city that absorbed the wisdom of the ancient East and the Soviet past, which is still expressed in the social life.
‘Tashkent.YOUTH’ is a portrait of a city; the first young generation that born after 1991, when Uzbekistan got Independence.
Both two projects reflect the modern reality of a Tashkent today, while the third one, ‘Tashkent.DREAMS’ is my compilation of moments, abstract objects I found in a city and selected photos from different series about human being I made the same year.
In general ‘Tashkent’ project is my personal presentation of the city.
