BiM and C41 present Extrema Ratio in collaboration with Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca to recontextualise the installation of the same name by Caritas Ambrosiana on prison conditions and the re-education of prisoners. Caritas’ nomadic initiative is an eight-square-meter cell set up in collaboration with inmates of Bollate Prison, a shared living space overcrowded in everyday life by people, stories, and personal objects. The dislocation of such a characterized living space leads it to be even more vulnerable as it is exposed to encounters with a place and strangers invited to experience on their own skin the discomfort of imprisonment and the claustrophobia of not belonging to a dwelling to be called home.
From the 17th of October till the 15th of November 2023, the space is open to be experienced and bring the visitors in close contact with the conditions of nowadays prison life in Milan. Inmates students and their tutors from Università degli Studi di Milano-Biccocca are present to guide through the installation. The installation is a faithful reproduction of a cell of only eight square meters to allow an immersive experience of prison overcrowding and is part of the schedule of events dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Polo Penitenziario of the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca.
Extrema Ratio, set up on the ground floor of the building, in C41 Panorama, investigates prison conditions through an installation of a true inmates’ living space, three photographs from PAC exhibition Ri-scatti. Per me si va tra la perduta gente in collaboration with RI-SCATTI ODV. and a series of interviews with Ileana Montagnini (Caritas Ambrosiana), Amedeo Francesco Novelli (Ri-Scatti ODV) e Gaia Pollastrini (Università Milano-Bicocca).
