About ‘Cowboys’ – words by Davide Fanton:

Cutting is a discipline coming from the ranches of West America. The cowboys practice it in order to isolate a single garment from the whole herd and to prevent the latter from being part of the group; this practice over the years became a real sporting discipline spread throughout the world.

We can find several Cutting Horse races also in Italy throughout the year. MotoGP Grand Prix-style weekend races are held with the difference that instead of motorcycles, the participants deal with horses.

Moreover the various teams, and unlike formula 1, here we can talk about real stables formed by whole families. During the races, in fact, we can find all the family members in the saddle from the smallest to the oldest.

This more than a sport, it is a lifestyle in all respects. The care and dedication required towards horses inevitably lead to living with them, therefore assimilating the western style in every aspect of daily life.

In October I found myself almost by chance in Voghera, having the chance to photograph a race of the Italian Cutting championship. Never having witnessed a similar event, I was immediately intrigued by the situation. Actually, what I found extremely interesting was to turn the camera not so much towards the race but rather the participants. Even the faces have the appearance of American cowboys, so for a few hours, I was catapulted to Fort Worth, in Texas.
