Questions On is the video interview format created by C41. Three are the ‘simple’ questions asked initially to the three curators, and later to the 14 photographers, who created and took part in the contemporary photography exhibition.

The fifth episode is with Synchrodogs, a duo of photographers from Ukraine – Tania Shcheglova (b.1989) and Roman Noven (b.1984) working together since 2008. Tania graduated from Information technology department of Ivano-Frankivsk national technical university of oil and gas in 2011, Roman graduated from Lutsk National Technical University in 2006. Both photographers are self-taught, currently residing in Ukraine. Artistic duo is represented by Stieglitz19 gallery in Antwerpen and Galleri Urbane in Dallas.

1.Over the years, how has the mentality of fashion photography changed?

We see the fashion scene becoming more open to what was considered weird or too arty 5 years ago, everybody wants to make something innovative, keep up with the pace of the modern world, and that is good news, it opens more possibilities to artists when they are given more freedom.

2.What makes photography contemporary art is perhaps the mix of languages, it is the lack of boundaries between one tool and another and the dialogue between different media. But when does photography really become contemporary art?

For us when it has a message to tell, when there is a mix of visual beauty and strong statement behind it. Our personal projects are nature related, they are a lot about interdependence of humans and nature and the new ways the Earth begins to look as a result of our interventions into the environmental processes. Discovering something that is truly important for the artist gives a viewer a deeper perspective of the issue via artworks created.

3.One of the fastest sectors is slowing down, aesthetics is changing just as beauty standards are changing. What do you think is the future of fashion photography?

The future of fashion may be in accepting the rule ‘less is more’ when it comes to production and consumption. If talking about fashion photography we would love fashion to become more open to all kinds of beauty, as we see so many beautiful people in life that are far from so-called fashion standards but have the sparkle, fire, charisma, are interesting to observe, are a total inspiration.
