Burro Studio is a creative platform providing 360° design and communication services. Founded in 2015 in Milan by Giovanni Manzini and Federica Caserio and later joined by Roberto Rigon, Burro Studio was born as a design studio mainly focused on branding and graphics. It later developed quickly, extending its range of action to an all-round Creative Direction. Burro Studio’s work extends to 3D Art and Animation, Web Design, Digital Content, Social Media, Production, Merchandising, and Events, crossing the boundaries of physical and digital realms. In addition to commissioned projects, we also focus on personal projects and collaborations. Burro Studio can also be defined as a brand, a community catalyst, and a trend generator: we design our own merch line, we manage entertainment and music events, we do research and experiment with visual and communication. Burro Studio is based in Milan and collaborates with clients, brands, and designers from all over the world.

Ilaria Sponda: What’s a studio for you? What do you think of your studio here in Milan?

Burro Studio: A studio is a place for creativity, where ideas and inspiration thrive. Here in Milan, our studio is not just our headquarters but it’s pretty much like a second home where we eat, brainstorm, even have arguments sometimes–the good ones!–and most of all, fuel our imagination.

IS: When did you move here?

BS: It was June of 2023. After spending almost 5 years in 20 square meters it was definitely time to move to a bigger place. Don’t take us wrong: we loved our first studio, and a piece of our heart will always stay there. Moving is part of growing up, even for studios.

IS: How was Burro Studio born and how has it developed up until now?

BS: We (Federica Caserio and Giovanni Manzini) met at the university and founded BS in 2015, just at the end of our master’s degree. We started it quite as a side job, but soon decided to fully dedicate ourselves to it, and later Burro studio was joined by Roberto Rigon. Burro Studio was born as a design studio mainly focused on branding and graphics. It later developed quickly, extending its range of action to an all-round Creative Direction: 3D Art and Animation, Web Design, Digital Content, Social Media, Production, Merchandising and Events.

IS: Who’s behind the direction of Burro Studio?

BS: Giovanni, Federica and Roberto. We can say we’re all creative directors yet on different realms/projects. Also, we all have quite different roles: Giovanni is on lead of all the business and accounting stuff, events project management and creative direction of BSR; Federica is mostly on all the creative and brainy stuff like research & concept, copywriting and branding; Roberto is on the lead of the 3D department and most experimental visual techniques, with a special focus on BSR (Burro Studio Radio).

IS: What has informed your aesthetics?

BS: Our aesthetics as a multidisciplinary design studio are informed by a fusion of influences, including contemporary art movements, sub-cultures, technological innovation, and the dynamic interplay between physical and digital realms. We draw inspiration from life and emotions, constantly evolving and adapting our approach to create immersive, innovative designs and memorable experiences.

IS: Your practice balances design, events, and music. What’s the importance of  being multidisciplinary in the contemporary world?

BS: Creativity can be found everywhere. Being multidisciplinary in today’s world is crucial because it fosters innovation and enables adaptability in a rapidly changing landscape. By integrating diverse perspectives and skill sets from different fields like design, events, and music, we can create rich and memorable experiences.

IS: What do your aesthetics say about the contemporary fluidity in physical and
digital realms of communication?

BS: Our aesthetics reflect the contemporary fluidity between physical and digital realms of communication, embracing a hybrid approach that blurs the boundaries between the two. This fusion allows for dynamic storytelling and engagement across multiple platforms, resonating with many different audiences.

IS: What’s next for Burro Studio?

BS: Everything involving fresh ideas and good vibes. We can’t tell a lot about upcoming projects but we promise there will be fun!
