Alexis Vasilikos was born in 1977 and is an Athens-based visual artist who works primarily with photography. He studied photography in Athens at Focus and A.k.t.o. and attended the Art History Course at D.A.M.S. in Bologna, Italy. Since 2012 he is the co-editor of Phases Magazine, an online publication that showcases fine art photography. He is represented by CAN Christina Androulidaki Gallery.
His work revolves around what can be called peripatetic photography, a combination of meditation through action followed by some energetic editing. His practice is deeply influenced by Eastern mysticism; the images are a result of an uninterrupted stream of visual consciousness taking shape. Even if his latest series are of thematic base making them more linear, all of the works are rooted in the same experience: they come out of emptiness and they are manifestations of the same concept. Referring to the visual style, the artist does not stick to a precise creative process, making beauty arise from the absence of identification.
About ‘Variations of Presence’ – words by Alexis Vasilikos:
Variations of Presence is a book of photos shot during daily walks in various parts of the world, seen as a form of meditation in action. The images are imbued by the energy of contemplative seeing and stillness.
