Alex de Brabant was born in Montreal, Canada. He’s a self-taught artist, specialised in portraiture and commissioned work. Over the last decade, Alex has portrayed creatives such as Natalie Portman, Ragnar Kjartansson, Valentino and Mark Ronson for publications including Art in America, Interview Magazine, The Guardian and The Talks.

Since 2010, he has shifted from commissions to focus on his own work. Throughout, he has developed sustained relationships with light, form and character, towards a deeper understanding of the human and object world. In 2012, Alex opened his first studio in Berlin, where he continues to work and live.

About ‘Borders’ – words byNicole Walker and Anders HAAL:

Racism and borders define today’s media landscape and receive new relevance in our society. What limitations separate, which defined spaces unite?

Shot by Alex de Brabant in Berlin, this story present parts of HAAL SS19 as well as the HAAL Duplex Lens depicting Earth versus Proxima B: the planet predicted by Stephen Hawking as our second home to be, our second chance after the ultimate fuck up. This story explores our perception, our connection to nature and the animal human division line. The iris as a planet, as the ultimate open window to the soul.

The book Borders questions otherness, separation and power hierarchies contextualising fashion and art at core. It is a visual discussion about zero tolerance for racism and explores the space beyond borders. Divided into four chapters, the book consists of works by Alex de Brabant, Chris Maggio, J Ari King, Henrik Alm and Valter Törsleff.
